Zelda Johns did not have extensive music training as a young person. A first generation American, Zelda’s family did not always have the money for music lessons. She was in and out of piano lessons starting at the age of seven. However, being an introvert and a latchkey kid of the 80’s, she kept up her piano skills by practicing the same old songs on her own. Her vocal and piano skills were developed through opportunities available in her school music programs. Namely, through district and state Solo and Ensemble festival. Zelda auditioned for and was denied acceptance into Florida State University School of Music as a vocalist. Fortunately, her high school chorus teacher’s wife was a piano teacher and gave her piano lessons in exchange for babysitting to prepare her piano audition. It was through piano that she was accepted into FSU’s music program, where she developed a crush on the Marching Chiefs drum major, who would later become her husband. Meanwhile, she earned her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Music Education. Zelda taught in Florida for nine years before moving to Pope High School. She is proud to pass the legacy of her public school music teachers on to her students.

Zelda teaches five performing choral ensembles at Pope High School. She has also occasionally waved a baton in front of an orchestra, “acted” like a musical theater director, and continued to despise alto and tenor clef while teaching kids how to write roman numerals.

Zelda performs regularly throughout the metro Atlanta area as a soprano soloist and in a variety of ensembles. She is currently pursuing her Ed Specialist degree through Auburn University.

What students say

The best part of my chorus experience is that I have gotten a space where I can just be with my friends and not worry about what others are thinking. I get a community where I can show off my singing skills and also make mistakes without being judged.
- Owen

The best part of chorus has got to be the confidence I gained by being more used to singing on stage and wearing goofy costumes. Before all this I was embarrassed to have fun. The more concerts I went to the more my confidence grew. I hope that I can fully achieve what i have always wanted with this confidence I have found in me, happiness.
